Introduction to Esala Poya
Esala Poya, a notable Buddhist festival, holds significant importance in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. Observed during the full moon in the month of Esala (July), it represents a time of spiritual reflection and communal gathering among Buddhists across Sri Lanka and other countries.
Cultural and Religious Importance
The Esala Poya festival commemorates several key historical events in the life of the Buddha. Most notably, it marks the occasion of the Buddha’s first sermon in the Deer Park at Sarnath, where he introduced the Four Noble Truths. Additionally, devotees celebrate the Buddha’s enlightenment and his teaching of the Dhamma to his first disciples. This gathering fosters a sense of unity within the Buddhist community, encouraging individuals to engage in meditation, prayer, and acts of goodwill.
Celebrations and Rituals
During Esala Poya, temples and shrines are adorned with flowers and colorful decorations, creating an atmosphere of reverence and joy. Devotees gather in large numbers to participate in programs such as Dhamma talks, chanting, and observing sil (moral precepts). Food offerings and alms to monks are also an integral part of the celebrations, reflecting the spirit of generosity that Buddhism espouses. Through these rituals, participants reinforce their commitment to the teachings of the Buddha and foster a deeper connection with their faith.

23 June 2025

Along with other prominent religious figures,
Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero visited the Iranian Embassy
on 23 June 2025 to offer condolences for the Iranian victims and to vehemently denounce the U.S. aggression on Iran.
Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero sent a message to the Iranian Embassy during the visit, saying: “As a national organisation, we vehemently condemn the attack by the United States, which used bombings and missiles to try to conquer the golden land of Iran, once known as ancient Persia and a wonder of the world, and forcibly entered the territory of a sovereign state. This action is a flagrant transgression of both international law and the United Nations Security Council’s guidelines.
We honour the valiant troops who sacrificed their lives to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Iranian state as honourable martyrs, and we do it with pride and gratitude. We are certain that Iran, a sovereign and independent country, has consistently been Sri Lanka’s just and equitable ally.
Since Israel initiated the initial attack, it must immediately stop its aggression against Iran if peace negotiations are to take place. This is the position taken by all of Sri Lanka’s religious authorities.
His Reverence recalled the long-standing friendship between Iran and Sri Lanka and emphasised Iran’s assistance in the fight against LTTE terrorism, including the supply of fuel during economic downturns, financial support for the Uma Oya Multipurpose Project, military equipment and aircraft training for the Sri Lankan Army, and assistance in the building and modernisation of the Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery.
The people of Sri Lanka genuinely hope that the current Iranian state, which was formerly the ancient and magnificent Persia that bestowed upon the world amazing literature, art, architecture, and a remarkable civilisation, will be permitted to maintain its sovereignty and territorial integrity while also promoting world peace.
